Any thoughts on allowing user created button icons? I have an X10 controller, and would like to create icons to represent specific lights in a room.

We have user created/customized button creation on our list of features to add in a future release.

I purchased 2 Re's for work, after purchasing a Re for my home equipment and seeing how versatile it is, especially after the 2.0 update. At work, I configured the Re's to control about 30+ consumer / industrial AV components, including videoconferencing equipment. What would definitely be helpful would be the ability to import customized buttons created by the user. As an example, there are no buttons currently in the list that can be used as a "Call" or "Hangup" button other than a generic button with that title underneath, or the "thumbs up / thumbs down" icons. Are there any plans for this ability to be included soon?

Hi Jarbil,
Thanks for your purchases and support of the Re. We are looking at supporting user customizable buttons for a future release. Would the ability to put custom text on a blank button be sufficient for your use?

Hi WBB, thank you for the quick response, and I'm glad user custom buttons are being considered. For me the optimal solution would be the ability to design buttons in a program such as Photoshop and then import them to the program. Another way could be via an editing program within Re app that allows for button design (color change, shapes, text, size etc.). For now, labels directly on the buttons would definitely be a step in the right direction.

I guess I'll post in this thread.
Would it be possible to allow a button background (blank) to be created that spans multiple columns/rows? For example, common buttons such as power, volume, and channels would be nice to create 4 columns wide or 2 columns tall.
I think a great way to accomplish this is with greater flexibility is to allow a button background to be chosen (unrestricted in cols/rows/color) and then lay over the 1 square function onto it. Basically allowing us to create a 2 row high volume up button, with a visible arrow up for the first square and no icon for the second, each one being a basic 1 square button, just hidden to create the two button layout. Obviously having a button's active area be stretched to those 2 squares would be better, but this allows flexibility without too much additional work. In addition, the power we gain to create larger buttons AND groupings of buttons with our own backgrounds would be fantastic!

Hi,
Thanks for the input. We are looking at button editing flexibility for a future release, so we'll gather inputs from this thread to include in our discussions.

First of all many thanks for making this product, its a fantastic advance.
I too would like to see the ability for large buttons to be created. Being able to design you own background image and button would also be a significant advance.
I would like to see the Ipad making use of the full width of the screen also.

I would also love to see using my own buttons on re.
Since I recognized that it loads custom buttons for the Apple TV remote, it might also be possible to have an exchange on this site. This way it might be easier to load custom buttons into the app.

I am a new user to RE universal; I am still waiting for the plug in IR device to be delivered. I have been running the software on an iPad to learn how to use the system before using it in anger. I have recently decided to switch to RE after using Philips and Marantz prontos for many years. I will be using this on my ipad only (I have 2 ipods); I personally will only be using the device screens and not the activity/favourite screens.
These are some of my thoughts on user definable buttons.
1) I am not very artistic so I find that creating my own buttons is difficult and tedious. Being able to import icons already created would be a bonus.
2) I would like to see more colours in the default buttons; for example the volume controls are only available in green and the DVD transport buttons are only available in white. Although it is possible to use a blank button it is not possible to have an icon on these buttons you have to use text.
3) I like the blank buttons in some instances; however it would be nice if it was possible to set the button default text size instead of the system chosing the size to fit the text on a button; the display looks better if the text is all the same size. A work around to this is to add spaces before and after the text.

I wouldn't really take time to make my own buttons but would like more to choose from as well as being able to "modify" current ones for things like colour of the button and colour of the text/icon within the button and maybe even size?!
Thanks,

I like the photoshop idea, but would also support an "easy" customization of text on a blank button. Also need more shapes and colors of blank buttons, such as triangles and lots of colors.

As for button cutomization, I would like to see the buttons editing to include the ability to use manufacturer letter styles like McIntosh and Oppo as the button. The capability of resizing and reshaping the button, button location placement, and selecting color schemes would be greatly appreciated. You have already solved the coding complexity problem that bedeviled the Philips Pronto. Adding these editing features with your IR database would put you ahead of the defunct Pronto. My goal would be to create a GUI similar to the Star Trek- the Next Generation control panel GUIs- an elegant interface.

We have some custom button capability in the upcoming release. You will be able to import custom designed buttons and network icons. We will not address resizing buttons in this release. You should be able to create unique remotes with the custom buttons and backgrounds.

Very good news. Any ETA on this release? Will the custom designed buttons still be limited to the same sizes as the now existing buttons?
If so, I'd like to add myself to the list of people wanting the ability to use different sizes of buttons (resizing inside the app using edit mode would be the best way for me); for me I'd like smaller buttons if possible. :)
Best regards,
Art

We're expecting to release V3.1 within a week or two.
We are not changing the basic grid spacing for the buttons in this release, so you must create buttons that fit within the grid. Our buttons now are the maximum size. You can create .png images with a transparent background if you want to make small or irregularly shaped buttons. The basic process is to create a button graphic image externally, transfer the image to Photos, and import it to the button list.

Since you there are no changes on the current grid spacing with V3.1, are there any plans for future versions? I would love to see only using one button for Volume +/- I.e. or Program +/- or using one large button for up/down/left/right and okay. Just like on the real remotes.
